Compare the2025 Jeep Wagoneer LVS 2025 Rivian R1S

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Wagoneer L are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The R1S doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Wagoneer L has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The R1S doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

With its standard Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, the Jeep Wagoneer L is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Rivian R1S, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Wagoneer L achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Rivian R1S has not been tested.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Wagoneer L has standard Park Assist with Rear Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The R1S doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Wagoneer L’s optional Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The R1S doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Wagoneer L Grand helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The R1S doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the Wagoneer L and the R1S have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Wagoneer L for 2 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance (up to 2 visits). Rivian doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the R1S.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Wagoneer L’s reliability 13 points higher than the R1S.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Rivian vehicles. With 66 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Jeep higher than Rivian.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Rivian vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Jeep 3 places higher in reliability than Rivian.

For better stopping power the Wagoneer L’s brake rotors are larger than those on the R1S:

For better traction, the Wagoneer L’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the R1S (285/45R22 vs. 275/50R22).

The Wagoneer L’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the R1S’ 65 series tires. The Wagoneer L’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the R1S Ascend Quad Max’s 50 series front tires.

The Jeep Wagoneer L’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Rivian R1S only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Wagoneer L has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The R1S doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Wagoneer L has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare costs extra on the R1S. Without the option you must depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Wagoneer L’s wheelbase is 8.9 inches longer than on the R1S (130 inches vs. 121.1 inches).

The Jeep Wagoneer L may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 100 to 400 pounds less than the Rivian R1S.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Wagoneer L has standard flush composite headlights. The R1S has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Wagoneer L uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The R1S doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Wagoneer L offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the R1S can only carry 7.

The Wagoneer L has .2 inches more front headroom, 8.5 inches more front hip room, 5.5 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 6.1 inches more rear legroom, 8.8 inches more rear hip room, 6.3 inches more rear shoulder room, .5 inches more third row headroom, 3.8 inches more third row legroom, 8.8 inches more third row hip room and 13.3 inches more third row shoulder room than the R1S.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Wagoneer L’s middle and third row seats recline. The R1S’ third row seats don’t recline.

The Wagoneer L’s cargo area provides more volume than the R1S.

The Wagoneer L’s cargo area is larger than the R1S’ in almost every dimension:

Both the Wagoneer L and the R1S offer second row automatic folding seats. The Wagoneer L’s third row seats also fold up or down at the press of a button. The R1S doesn’t offer automatic folding third row seats.

A standard locking glovebox and optional locking center console (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Wagoneer L. The R1S doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Wagoneer L’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The R1S’ tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Wagoneer L’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The R1S doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its tailgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Maximum trailer towing in the Rivian R1S is limited to 7700 pounds. The Wagoneer L offers up to a 10,000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Wagoneer L 4WD with optional equipment can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Wagoneer L can be unhitched and driven around locally. The R1S can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the R1S, the Wagoneer L Grand offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, foot pedal distance, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Wagoneer L offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The R1S doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Wagoneer L’s standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. The R1S doesn’t even offer side window demisters, so the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Wagoneer L to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The R1S doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Wagoneer L is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The R1S’ mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Wagoneer L has standard front air conditioned seats and the Wagoneer L Grand Series III also has them in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The R1S doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Wagoneer L Grand has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the R1S.

The Wagoneer L’s optional ParkSense Automated Parking can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The R1S doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The Wagoneer L is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The R1S doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Wagoneer L first among large suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The R1S isn’t in the top three.

The Jeep Wagoneer outsold the Rivian R1S by over two to one during 2024.
